Hearing tests for children
Concerned about your child's hearing and now you want a hearing test to confirm or relieve your suspicions?
Testing the hearing of children can be challenging. At the Jervis Bay Hearing Centre, we test children over the age of 3. We use an Audiologist trained in testing Paediatrics. Prior to the test, we will ask you to give us some hearing history. This will include questions about your child's history of ear infections, speech, language and physical development as well as asking about your own concerns. At the test, our Paediatric Audiologist will focus on your child and will ask you for details after the test. We look into the canal, test the middle ear as well as testing hearing. For young children, testing hearing looks much like a game. Our aim is to find out whether your child has adequate hearing to develop speech and language. Once we have completed our testing, the results will be explained to you. Any onward management recommended will always be discussed and you will decide, often in conjunction with your family doctor, how best to proceed.
In 2015/16 Alison conducted a study on the children she tested here in the Shoalhaven. She presented the results in 2018 at the National Audiology Conference in Sydney and also at the National Otitis Media Conference in Darwin. Some interesting statistics came out of the research.
