Be Aware Of Hearing Aid Myths!

It seems lately we're all being bombarded with lots of information regarding hearing aids.  While it's true that information regarding this issue is extensive, it can also be extremely confusing and overwhelming!
Here at the Jervis Bay Hearing Centre, we intend to make this information clearer as to enable you to make informed decisions for your hearing health.
Below we have addressed some common myths regarding hearing aids, and how in reality, it couldn't be further from the truth!


MYTH:
The devices are costly and unaffordable

REALITY:
You can choose a suitable device for most hearing losses in any budget range

MYTH:
Hearing aids are obvious, bulky & ugly

REALITY:
There are a range of styles which meet different needs, some are smaller in size than others.  Some sit in different locations on the ear.

MYTH:
They're the same as 20 years ago when Grandma had them

REALITY:
Hearing aids have advanced enormously over the last 20 years.  New technology is coming out all the time.

MYTH:
They don't help unless you have severe hearing loss

REALITY:
Hearing aids can help a range of losses from mild through to profound.  Of all people with hearing losses only 30% of them are advised to think about hearing aids.

MYTH:
Only old people get hearing aids

REALITY:
In Australia right now, the age group with the most hearing loss is the under 65 year olds!!  So, in Australia hearing aids are for all ages.

MYTH:
If I get a hearing test, they'll just push me into buying a hearing aid.
REALITY:
Having a hearing loss DOES NOT mean you need a hearing aid.  Many People can be assisted by other means.  A good clinician is there to help!

MYTH:
Hearing aids make everything too loud
REALITY:
As you re-enter the world of normal hearing, you will notice your quiet muffled world has changed.  This is normal and as you continue to wear your device things will settle down for you

MYTH:
I only need 1 hearing aid for my deaf side.
REALITY:
Having a hearing loss in one ear is different from having a hearing loss in both ears and choosing to wear just one aid.

MYTH:
Follow-ups aren't necessary, they just want more money
REALITY:
Follow-ups are important.  They give your clinician an important opportunity to check on how you have progressed with the fitting or adjustments you have been recommended

MYTH:
Hearing aids should work right away - like new reading glasses
REALITY:
This is false!  Hearing aids change your brain, and it can take months for you to adjust to them (with continual wearing).

MYTH:
If I don't like them, I'm stuck with them
REALITY:
if you don’t like your hearing aid, tell your clinician what it is that you don’t like and they will adjust it for you.
But beware of some cheap devices that limit adjustments.
