Tinnitus, Information and Treatment

Tinnitus, ringing ears or a buzzing sound in the ear, is a complex and commonly misunderstood problem. There are several possible causes of tinnitus, including ear wax pressing up against the eardrum, overexposure to noise, or in some cases a disease condition of the ear itself. Tinnitus can be quite distressing to people and it can become invasive and intrusive. Some people report that it can be so loud it drowns out conversation and interferes with the clarity of their thought.

Many people are told that their tinnitus cannot be fixed and they must simply put up with it. This is simply not true. The good news is that if you have tinnitus that is worrisome or bothersome you can almost certainly be helped.Treating tinnitus depends on what is causing it and the first step on the path to successful treatment is to have a diagnostic hearing test.

International Tinnitus Specialists

The Jervis Bay Hearing Centre were thrilled to play host to Professor Pawel J. Jastreboff, PhD. and Dr Margaret Jastreboff, PHD. during their world speaking tour recently. They visited only Sydney and Melbourne on the Australian leg of their tour but took the time to drop in to visit with Alison at the Jervis Bay Hearing Centre.

Dr Pawel Jastreboff is a neuroscientist and developed the world renown Tinnitus Retraining Therapy program.

Alison Chiam, the Principal Audiologist at the Jervis Bay Hearing Centre, has studied the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy program under the Jastreboff’s and delivers it to clients at the Vincentia and Ulladulla clinics.

Tinnitus is a physical condition, experienced as noises or ringing in the ears or head when no such external physical noise is present. It can vary in severity and can have a big impact on quality of life. Tinnitus is a symptom requiring further investigation.  It can be associated with a hearing loss or other pathology but sometimes it is present with normal hearing and for no discernible reason.

Tinnitus is a common concern for many people in our community and for a long time it was thought that there was no treatment and one just had to ‘put up with it’. This is far from the truth.

Alison is passionate about providing this life changing program of tinnitus retraining therapy. Her participation to a worldwide research program is testament to her ongoing commitment to providing world-class treatment for those many people who thought there was no hope of relief.
